How a Solar Lease Works

1

Free Consultation

We assess your roof, energy usage, and utility territory. You get a custom savings estimate — no cost, no obligation.

2

Custom System Design

Our engineering team designs a solar + battery system sized specifically for your home and electricity needs.

3

Professional Installation

Fully permitted, inspected, and utility-connected. We handle all the paperwork — you don't lift a finger.

4

Start Saving Immediately

Pay a fixed $0.10/kWh (avg.) for the solar energy your system produces — typically 30-50% less than your current utility rate. Battery backup protects you during outages.

5

After 15 Years — You Choose

Purchase the system at a low fair-market buyout price, then enjoy $0/month electricity for the remaining 10-20 year life of the panels. Or have the panels removed at no cost — your roof is returned to its original condition.

Solar Lease vs. Buying

Both paths save you money. The right choice depends on your budget, goals, and how much hassle you want to deal with.

Why Lease Instead of Buy?

The solar landscape changed in 2026. Here's why leasing is now the smartest path for most Illinois homeowners.

Key Change for 2026

The Federal ITC Expired for Homeowners

The 30% residential Investment Tax Credit ended in December 2025. If you buy cash today, you pay full price — no federal discount. But lease providers can still claim the business ITC, and they pass those savings through to you as lower payments.

How Incentives Work

Lease Provider Claims RECs + ITC, You Get Lower Payments

Through the Illinois Shines program, your lease provider claims the Renewable Energy Credits and the business ITC on your system. Instead of you dealing with paperwork and waiting 18 months for a REC check, those incentives are baked into your lower lease rate from day one.

Hassle-Free

Zero Maintenance for 15 Years

When you own a solar system, inverter failures, panel issues, and monitoring are all on you. With a lease, the provider handles everything — repairs, replacements, monitoring — for the entire 15-year term. You just pay your fixed rate and save money.

Battery Backup

Battery Included at No Extra Upfront Cost

A home battery system costs $8,000–$15,000 to buy outright. With a solar lease, battery backup is included for $70/month — giving you outage protection and energy independence without a massive cash outlay.

Illinois Utility Rates Keep Climbing

Ameren IL and ComEd rates have nearly doubled since 2021, and they're projected to keep rising. The average Illinois homeowner now pays $0.15\u2013$0.18/kWh or more. A solar lease locks you in at $0.10/kWh (avg.) for 15 years — and that gap only grows as utility rates increase.

Solar Lease FAQ

$0 down. You pay approximately $0.10/kWh (avg.) for the solar energy your system produces, plus $70/month for battery backup. Our default option is a fixed rate — the same payment from year 1 through year 15. We also offer a low-escalator option (2.99%/year) that starts with a lower payment if you want the absolute lowest cost in the early years — still well below average utility rate inflation.
You have three options: (1) Purchase the system at a low fair-market buyout price — then your electricity cost drops to $0/month for the remaining 10-20 year life of the panels. (2) Renew the lease on annual terms. (3) Have the panels removed at no cost — the installer removes all equipment and returns your roof to its original condition, including patching any penetration points.
Yes. Solar leases are fully transferable to the new homeowner. The buyer takes over the same fixed rate and terms — which is actually a selling point, since they inherit immediate energy savings.
Our standard lease is a fixed rate — ~$0.10/kWh (avg.) in year 1 is the same rate in year 15, which is what most of our customers choose. We also offer a 2.99% annual escalator option for homeowners who want the lowest possible starting payment. Even with the escalator, your rate stays well below typical utility rate increases (which have averaged 6-8% annually in Illinois). We'll walk you through both options so you can pick what fits your budget best.
The installer will remove and reinstall the panels at no cost to you so your roof can be repaired. Panel removal and reinstallation is covered under the lease agreement.
The lease provider claims the federal business ITC and Illinois Shines RECs on your behalf, then passes those savings through to you as a lower lease rate. You benefit from the incentives without any paperwork or waiting.
Most lease programs require a minimum 650 FICO score. If your credit score is below 650, ask us about other options — we work with multiple programs to find the right fit.
From signing to activation, the typical timeline is 1-3 months. This includes engineering, permitting, installation, inspection, and utility interconnection. We handle all of it.
Solar leases are available to homeowners in Ameren Illinois (central and southern IL) and ComEd (northern IL and Chicagoland) service territories. Contact us to confirm your eligibility.
Excess energy goes back to the grid through net metering. You receive credits on your utility bill that offset future usage — so nothing goes to waste.
