A Squirrel Under Your Solar Panels Can Chew Through a Wire in a Weekend — and Homeowners Insurance Usually Won't Pay
Yes, squirrels and birds nest in the gap under rooftop solar panels, and in Illinois the fall is when it starts. Chewed wiring, packed nesting debris, and baked-on droppings are all excluded under the standard HO-3 homeowners policy, so on a system you own the repair is yours; on a $0-down lease it belongs to the system owner. A critter guard runs an estimated $600 to $2,800 installed based on one installer's published 2026 pricing, and it costs far less at install than as a retrofit.

There's a gap under your solar panels. Most homeowners never think about it, but it's usually four to six inches between the bottom of the panel frame and the shingles, and it's there on purpose — panels run cooler with air moving underneath them, and cooler panels make more power.
That same gap is a covered, dry, wind-sheltered shelf about ten feet off the ground. Come September in Illinois, that's prime real estate.
I bring it up now because fall is when it starts. Gray and fox squirrels go hunting for winter dens right about the time the maples turn. And the homeowner I talk to in March, standing in the driveway holding a repair quote, almost always tells me the same thing: nobody mentioned this at the sale.
What actually goes wrong up there
Three things, roughly in order of how expensive they get.
Nesting debris comes first. Leaves, twigs, shredded insulation, and pine straw pack into the gap. That's mostly a fire question — dry tinder sitting next to live DC wiring — and a water question, because a packed gap holds moisture against your shingles instead of letting it drain away.
Droppings come second. Pigeons and starlings roosting under an array coat the panels above and the roof below. Bird droppings are acidic and they bake on. A soiled panel makes less power, and unlike dust it doesn't rinse off in the next rain.
Chewed wire is the expensive one. Squirrels gnaw constantly, because their incisors never stop growing, and the wiring under a rooftop array happens to be the diameter they like. One bad chew takes a string offline. Boston Solar, a Massachusetts installer, put a number on it in a February 2026 post, citing wildlife-control research: a single squirrel can cause "over $2,000 in electrical damage to a residential solar system in under 48 hours." Treat that as an estimate from another market, not a quote for your roof.
Here's the part that stings. Most of those systems ran degraded for weeks before anybody noticed.
The insurance answer nobody likes
I'll be blunt about this one, because it's the thing I most often have to break to people.
Standard homeowners policies exclude it. The HO-3 form — the policy most Illinois homeowners actually carry — excludes damage caused by "birds, rodents or insects" (older editions of the form named vermin too). The exclusion runs wider than the animal itself: it also covers "nesting or infestation, or discharge or release of waste products or secretions, by any animals."
The reasoning insurers give is that pest damage is a maintenance problem, not a sudden accident. A squirrel doesn't chew through a conductor the way hail cracks a panel. It happens over weeks, and the industry position is that upkeep would have caught it.
There's one narrow opening. If a chewed wire starts a fire, the fire damage may well be covered under your dwelling coverage — but the chewed wiring that caused the fire still isn't. You get paid for the consequence, not the cause.
Read your own declarations page before you take my word for it. Policies vary, and a handful of carriers sell limited pest endorsements. Just don't assume.
Who eats the cost depends on how you got the panels
On a $0-down lease or a power purchase agreement, you don't own the equipment. The system owner does, and maintenance is part of the arrangement. A chewed conductor on a leased array is their problem to fix, because it's their asset and their production revenue. That's one of the underrated parts of leasing that never makes the sales pitch, which usually stops at the monthly number.
Own the system outright and it's all yours. Every wire, every clip, every nest. Your warranty may cover a defective part, but no manufacturer warranty covers an animal, and no workmanship warranty covers wildlife. That's a repair bill.
I'm not telling you to lease because of squirrels. I am telling you that "who fixes it" is a real line item, and most people weigh a lease against a cash purchase on the monthly payment alone and never price it in. Our honest cost breakdown covers the rest of the ownership math.
One more wrinkle if you own: if your installer is gone, you still need someone willing to take the repair. I wrote about that after a national installer's bankruptcy left Illinois customers hunting for service.
The Illinois piece the national articles miss
Every national explainer on this topic stops at "it costs money to repair." In Illinois there's a second angle, and the out-of-state content farms have no particular reason to know about it.
Illinois Shines prices the incentive on your system by the production the state expects it to deliver over a 15-year contract — one renewable energy credit per 1,000 kWh. Under the 2026 contract, half of that payment arrives at energization and the rest is paid quarterly over six years. The published 2026-27 prices for systems up to 10 kW are $70.37 per REC in Ameren Illinois territory and $80.77 per REC in ComEd territory.
The incentive was sized for a system that keeps producing. Say a soiled or partly offline array quietly loses 10% for a year. That's power you buy back from the utility at retail, and it's production the state already paid for and isn't getting. Before you grab a ladder, Illinois law has an opinion
This one surprises people. You may not be free to remove whatever's living up there.
Wildlife Illinois — a site built by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources alongside the National Great Rivers Research and Education Center and University of Illinois Extension — puts it plainly. Wildlife "are owned collectively by the people, not by individual property owners," and "most species of wildlife are protected under the Illinois Wildlife Code, and they may only be legally removed if a permit has been issued by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources."
In practice that means a Nuisance Animal Removal Permit from IDNR for most species, and the state's own guidance says one "will be issued only if the animal is causing substantial property damage or if there is a serious public health or safety concern." If an animal does get relocated, you need permission from the owner of the property where it's released, and it can't be turned loose in parks, nature preserves, or natural areas.
Birds add a federal layer. The Migratory Bird Treaty Act protects native migratory species, and an active nest with eggs or chicks in it can't legally be disturbed. Three of the birds most likely to be under your panels are the exceptions — rock pigeons, European starlings, and house sparrows are all non-native and unprotected, so their nests can come out any time.
Identify what you've got before anything comes down, and if it isn't one of those three, call a licensed operator instead of improvising.
What a guard costs, and how to judge the quote
Critter guard is unglamorous hardware — a strip of galvanized mesh clipped around the perimeter of the array, closing the gap while still letting air move through it.
One Northeast installer's 2026 pricing runs roughly $600 to $950 on a 4 to 6 kW system, $1,100 to $1,700 on an 8 to 10 kW system, and $1,900 to $2,800 or more above 12 kW. Retrofit costs more than doing it at install. If something's already living up there, extraction, nest removal, and washing can add an estimated $500 to $1,500 on top. Treat all of that as a ballpark from another market and get an Illinois quote before you budget.
Three questions I'd put to any installer:
- Is critter guard in this proposal, and if not, what does it add today versus as a retrofit in three years?
- Is it clipped to the module frames, or screwed through something? Nothing should be penetrating your roof for this.
- Does adding it change anything about the panel or workmanship warranty?
If you're in the trees — a lot of Belleville, Edwardsville, and the older shaded streets in Springfield and Peoria qualify — I'd put it on at install and never think about it again. Open subdivision out on the prairie, less pressing.
What I'd do this fall
Look under the edge of your array from the ground with binoculars, or out an upstairs window if you have the angle. You're looking for packed debris, droppings streaking the shingles below, or a worn path along the roof edge. Then open your monitoring app and check whether this summer's production tracked last summer's. An array that's been quietly derated since April is the most avoidable expensive surprise I run into.
